The Fallacy of Lactate Acid in Training

:From ooBdoo The Free Information Database

Many of us have heard for years that exercise causes the production of lactate acid. That much is true. However, new research says that almost everything else we were told about lactate acid seems to be wrong.

Contents

Lactate Acid Threshold

Scientists theorized about a lactate acid threshold. We would cross this threshold when we exercised a muscle(s) at a rate which made the muscle produce more lactate acid than our body could transport away from the area. This would lead to a build up of lactate acid, which caused fatigue and a loss of performance. It also led to DOMS or delayed onset muscle soreness.

Both of these theories now seem to be completely false. Lactate acid not only does not contribute to either of these conditions; but, it is now considered to be a “good guy.” It actually seems to play an important part in helping us to make more ATP, Adenosine Triphosphate, which is the primary fuel used by our muscle cells during exercise.

Fatigue is still caused by a lack of ATP and training will help our bodies become more efficient not only at using what supply we have stored up, but also at making new ATP from our molecular resources at hand using either Anaerobic glycolysis or the Aerobic Krebs or Citric Acid cycle.

The "Burn"

The “Burn” we feel when exercising intensely is caused when the area around the working muscle becomes too acidic. Lactic Acid does contribute to this “burning sensation”; but, researchers do not believe this acidic or burning condition causes any damage in of itself.

Articles like this actually do very little for the average person or even the elite athlete, EXCEPT to remind them that we still have no real clue as to EXACTLY what happens when and even less as to why it happens.

Keep an open mind in all things concerning your body. Never take anything as gospel.

Always research, examine to learn and grow. And read articles like this. I promise to do the researching and examining so you can learn and grow!
